Raising my child away from my home land I find language an important link between my child, my family in Macau and me. It’s not simply a medium for communication but also a way to connect to our roots. I enjoy speaking Cantonese and singing. Through my own experience in learning languages and cultures, I find singing a great way to learn and to retain what I have learnt. It is also a fun thing to do and I can do it anywhere, anytime (almost ;D). So when my son was born (into our trilingual family), I started looking for ways to create an environment in which he can interact in Cantonese.

The name of this site is Cantonese NYC because it is where it all started. With the support of a few mom friends I started a group at the library singing songs and telling stories in Cantonese to small children. Since then we have met in different places in the city singing for our children and making new friends. I created this site to share all the songs we sang and useful resources for teaching children Cantonese that I discovered along the way. I have also rewritten some lyrics so that the songs are more relatable to our current life.

If you live in the New York area, please like our Facebook page so that you are updated with our next meeting time and come to some of our meetings. We welcome all families, Cantonese speaking or not, as it’s beneficial for children to be exposed to different languages. If you have any comment or suggestion please feel free to drop me a line. I hope you will find this site helpful.

Keep singing!
