Cantonese is a vibrant and fun language, ever-evolving with new buzzwords coming out after every contemporary event. It is a homophonous language which contains a lot of words with the same sound or tone. Several methods have been developed to romanize Cantonese for easy learning and here we use the Jyutping. On our song sheets you will see rows that are highlighted to specify the Jyutping romanization as a guide to the pronunciation of the words. Each Jyutping romanization has the following format:
利 梨
lei6 lei4
in which “lei” is the sound and the number is the tone. lei6 and lei4 sound a bit different from one another and mean completely different things. 梨 lei4 means pear and 利 lei6 means profit. To further explain it, the following videos will give a better idea of what tones are:
